Abstract:Theories of hegemony of the US commonly ignore the role of American philanthropy in the contemporary transformation of world society and the globalization of capitalism. This essay suggests that the philanthropy foundation, and with it the institution of philanthropy, is being fortified by the expansion of its domestic role of foreign activities and to globally framed activities within the USA. The essay proposes that US philanthropy exports and offers a preliminary theoretical interpretation of the empirical patterns on international grant-making activities by US foundations, considering John W. Mayer’s concept of instrumental culture and some arguments made by Foucauldian scholars.
