Abstract:In organizing R&D activities, projects are the standard mode. This paper focuses on analyzing the relationship btw. the project operations of the R&D -based firm and its Human Resource Management (HRM), based on a comparative case study of AstraZeneca and Volvo Car Corporation. Five critical areas within the HRM practice are identified where special attention is needed due to project intensification. As to the structural effects, two separate logics for HR specialists are identified: the HR-based logic and the task-based one. These logics provide new knowledge about the HR organisation design and about how the HR departmental structures are to be adapted in a project-intensive setting. Three alternative roles for line managers assuming increased HR responsibility are also presented through the case studies.
