Abstract:This study investigates the impact of pre-departure cross-cultural training (CCT) length, participation and comprehensiveness on expatriate adjustment. Unlike previous research, this study focuses on the effectiveness of the training for non-US employees expatriated to different host countries. Based on the analysis of the data from 339 expatriates from 20 German Multinational Corporations (MNCs), the paper suggests that CCT has little effect on general, interactional or work-setting expatriate adjustment, whereas the impact of foreign language competence was found to be important for all three dimensions.
