Abstract:Resource dependence theory is applied to understand the adoption of cross-border constraint-absorption strategies (here as: strs.) by firms. This study explores how trade dependence drives these strs. in the form of interindustry mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and strategic alliances in U.S. manufacturing industries. Based on panel data from 1995 to 2000, among others it is found that resource dependence theory provides a useful framework for predicting the adoption of various constraint-absorption strs. in an industry in a foreign country.
