Abstract:The shift from manufacturing to service jobs, the technological displacement of workers as well as the trend of substituting labor by capital is undeniable. The majority of tomorrow's factories will be represented by small to middle-sized automated units, highly flexible and responsive to the varying needs of markets, customers and technology, producing batches rather than bulk. Linked together in integrated clusters, their design, planning and control will be dominated by elements of the highly versatile job-shop rather by those of line production.
