Abstract:Optimal public policy regarding job search is considered. Three objective functions: that of an unemployed searcher, that of an employed person, and the social objective are explained. These depend on the level of search effort, which has two dimensions: intensity and duration. Socially optimal search intensities and reservation wages are derived and it is shown that, given a finite time horizon, the first increases and the second decreases with time. It is shown that financial support by itself can be manipulated to attain the desired reservation wages, but is cannot induce the desired search intensity.
