Abstract:Although the Building Societies Act received Royal Assent on 25 July 1986 and most sections became effective on 1 January 1987,its immediate result was more identical to a whisper than a bang.Even now, many of the building societies are still considering their reaction to their newly received powers. This is due to their cautious nature and the fact that they have been regulated by legislation essentially unchanged for almost a century.A building society's principal purpose is to provide mortgages for house purchases.
