Abstract:The most widely used microeconomic model of trade union behavior ignores the distinction between "insiders" and "outsiders". The model developed here acknowledges this difference and this one is mathematically more general. The main economic idea is that once all members of a labour group have jobs, that group no longer attaches any weight to its employment goal, and becomes concerned with the task of raising the wages earned by its members. The relation between employment levels is investigated. The willingness of insiders to let in outsiders is analyzed and some of the macroeconomic implications are explained.
