Abstract:Japan's success in analyzed. The key factors are: quality, reliability and suitability to the buyers' needs. Japan's 5000 years old cultural background and post-war commercial image building are equally important. Hybrid Japanese/American total quality management system: American in philosophy, Japanese in practice. Influence of Crosby's "zero defects" concept. The role of managerial actions, education and implementation means. Quality goods are generated by quality management. Quality circles, and campaigns might not serve as substitutes of improving quality in a thoroughly professional manner. However quality has to be everyone's responsibility.
