Abstract:Petitions filed by US firms against nonmarket economy exporters under the countervailing duty statute are summarized. The background of the question is highlighted. Specific allegations levelled against Polish and Czech steel producers are analysed in detail.Discriminating mechanisms used by the mentioned countries are discussed. Exchange rate systems in centrally planned economies are outlined. Statistics are presented about commercial and tourist exchange rates. The possibilities for future prospect are summarized.
