Abstract:Dynamic models of labor demand are theoretically analyzed regarding the firm's adjustment costs. In several recent studies of labor demand these costs have been assumed constant over a longer period in which important employment-related changes have been taking place (legislation, unionization etc.). The adjustment cost hypothesis is tested using a lot of time series. The effects of changes in the environmental conditions are identified with a view to the optimal adjustment path of employment. Some conclusions are drawn.
