Abstract:The history of Shell is reviewed. The planning procedures of the company are discussed. The importance of analyzing business environment is highlighted. The concept of institutional learning is examined. A definition is presented comparing it with personal learning. Planning is described as a learning process. Examples are presented for institutionalized change based on environmental appraisal. Scenario analysis is discussed as an effective planning method in Shell. Traps planners apt to fall are outlined. The role of the consultant and the facilitator is described. Planning models are evaluated. Possible future methodological developments are summarized.
