Abstract:The computerization process in Latin America is discussed. Main characteristics of the industry are summarized. The regional situation regarding the distribution of computer equipment is described. Statistics are presented about hardware installations, foreign computer trade and production. The general structure of foreign trade is examined. The level of development reached in the manufacture of computer equipment and in software production is analysed. The informatics policies followed for manufacture, software development and other areas are discussed. The informatics policy of Argentina is examined in detail. Regional cooperation mechanisms are outlined.
