Abstract:Employee participation in decision making has become an integral feature of such organization development interventions as job enrichment, quality circles, gainsharing, quality of worklife programs, and new plant design. The benefits of participative management have been widely praised, but some negatives have been overlooked. Very little has been written about the personal problems of the participators. In focusing on the potential problems for and consequences to employees during the start-up of participation programs, the following three areas are examined: peer-group pressure; management coercion or retribution; reentry adaptation when participators are thrust back into narrow, rigidly traditional tasks.
