Abstract:Direct evidence is examined on reservation wages as reported by a large sample of unemployed persons in Great Britain in September 1982. The extent to which reservation wages are high is assessed by comparison with the agent's own past wage in last employment, and this ratio of reservation to past wage, the reservation wage ratio, is studied to determine how it varies according to spell length, the reported reason why the person became unemployed, age and sex. Although a majority of persons have a ratio no greater than one, a substantial minority of the whole sample and of many of its sub-groups are found to have a reservation wage strictly in excess of their past wage.
