| Abstract: | The transportation environment for the early 1980s has been characterized by rising energy, labour, and capital costs; increasing rate freedom and flexibility; and intensified mode and carrier competition. Multi-stage transportation consolidation analysis using dynamic simulation shows significant promise as a tool that can aid managers in the evaluation of alternative transportation strategies. A dynamic simulating model capable of replicating complex distribution system operations is presented and the effects of various alternative strategies on a firm's distribution system performance are evaluated. |
