Abstract:West-German agriculture is highly protected both on EEC and national level Price subsidies alone constitute a 54 %. This has a direct cost to the German tax-payer and consumer, but beyond that has also indirect cost through higher wage costs and lower competitiveness of German industrial products and also retaliation by foreign countries. The paper quantifies these indirect costs of agricultural protectionism to the German economy by a 13 sector general equilibrium model and finds 4 % loss in employment and 3 % in national income.
