Abstract: | The public's understanding of three terms frequently used as synonyms for capitalism: private, free, and American enterprise system, was examined. Capitalism is perceived negatively on several dimensions compared to private enterprise. It is suggested that capitalism connotes not merely an economic system but a complex of institutions and attitudes, a culture. The research on capitalism is extended by further investigating the link between perceptions of capitalism and perceptions of business. It was found that there is a perceptual linkage between capitalism and big business. This is in contrast to the private-enterprise system evoking a picture of small business. |
