Abstract: | Discussions about American competitiveness have overlooked a major area ripe for improvement - the manufacturing-services interface. Technological changes have made the service industries into some of the most important customers, suppliers, and coalition partners for manufacturers, radically changing the strategic environment. A number of past misconceptions concerning services are critically examined. Major service/manufacturing interactions are discussed: services generate markets for manufacturing; service technologies improve market resposiveness; manufacturers are becoming service producers etc. Services are now the linchpin of the economic growth and of manufacturing effectiveness in the USA. |
