Abstract:A study was carried out on three samples of unemployed school-leavers. In each case, interest focused on possible differences between those who had been unemployed since leaving school and those who had become unemployed following job loss. The results based on longitudinal observations show that there was no evidence of an overall decline in psychological well-being. However, both job loss and prolonged unemployment in the young may be potentially damaging both to the individual and to society in the long term.
