Abstract:An analysis is carried out to identify features which have been responsible for that fast growth of the Japanese industry. It is found that the industrial competitiveness is not the exclusive result of Japanese management methods but a combination of factors, including regular upgrading of manufacturing facilities, intensive skill development, strong technical information support, and comprehensive institutional frameworks for assimilating, generating and diffusing new technology. Developed and developing countries can learn a number of lessons from the Japanese experience of increasing international competitiveness.
