Abstract: | Recently developed measures of flexibility and adaptivity for machines and groups of machines in a manufacturing setting are explored, by means of illustrative examples. Measures of flexibility are defined which take into account how well a machine or group of machines can perform a set of tasks to be done relative to a background task set. The flexibility measures are also based on the relative weights of importance of the tasks and the efficiencies of the machines in doing them. The measure of adaptivity is defined as the difference of weighted flexibility in two situations, usually taken at different points in time, and it can also be used to determine how the flexibility measure of a machine changes in continuous time. |
