Abstract:The culmination of a four-year-study of high technology product innovation is reported. During the course of this research, over 330 new products in the electronics industry were examined in order to understand factors that differentiated successful and unsuccessful product development efforts. In the final phase of research a model of product development was tested empirically. The model identifies critical organizational subunits, development activities and communication channels that influence product outcome. External factors characteristic of the product and the competitive environment were also discussed. Prior research is briefly reviewed emphasizing those studies that have compared product successes and failures.
