Abstract:With the implementation of an internal European market, governments and businesses in the member countries of the European Community hope to gain economic advantages. The integration of the energy markets will have considerable benefits too; first of all lower prices. On the other hand, the negative effects of lower energy prices on energy consumption, environment and employment have not yet been taken into account. Low energy prices are very likely to lead to higher energy consumption, lower energy efficiency, higher pollution and greater external effects. The implementation of the internal market has to be accompanied by a change in the energy policy towards energy conservation and by the harmonization of environmental policies.
