Abstract:The Third World coped reasonably well with the consequences of the first oil shock, and although overall growth and industrialization suffered major setbacks as a result of the 1979 shock and the wide-ranging crisis of the 1980s, agriculture and food production generally kept pace with population growth and, in Asia, even achieved sustained per capita growth. Sectorial and regional differences in performance are analyzed, and questions answered whether the previous performance of agriculture was itself responsible for the economic downturn in developing countries in the 1980s, and what the implications have been for rural poverty.
