Abstract: | In 1884 the Australian Stock Exchanges undertook substantial deregulation. In the years preceding the event the AASE argued that the deregulation of brokerage rates and entry requirements would be harmful to the general interests of investors and brokers alike. Antagonists argued the opposite, with both sides making predictions and providing analysis based on periods when rates were fixed. These predictions are examined in the light of evidence about what actually happened. The results show significant downward adjustments to brokerage rates as well as considerable rate experimentation in the period following deregulation. |
