Abstract:Self-ratings of performance were compared with supervisory ratings of subordinate performance using a sample of 982 leader-subordinate dyads drawn from nine different organizations in China. The study aimed to determine whether the doctrine of leniency in self-ratings is supported outside the bounds of Western culture. The results show that Chinese employees rate their own job performance lower than their supervisors do.
