Abstract: | Excess indigeneous capacity, transplant operation, and foreign imports are hardening competitive pressures on all European vehicle assemblers. A global race has developed to align key suppliers to a strategic infrastructure of "co-producers" on the Japanese pattern. The effectiveness will depend on the combination of insight into market, customer and competitive needs, flexibility and responsiveness to competitive thrusts, efficiency in the use of their global assets, elimination of non-added value activities in the chain, and an adoption of a vigorous culture of "continuous" improvement. In the 1980s all major automotive manufacturers in Europe embarked on programmes aimed at reducing the number of direct suppliers. |
