Abstract:The HLM (1988) paper is founded firmly in the subjectivist-individualist tradition of Smith, Hayek and Buchanan. According to this approach, efficiency enhancing institutional innovations occur whenever two or more individuals realize together that differences among them give rise to exchange opportunities. On the other hand, functionalist theories simply postulate causal links from one macrostate to another without basing the explanation on the micromotives of the individuals.
