Abstract:The proportion of part-time and temporary workers in the labour force has increased dramatically. The reasons for the growth of the contingent workforce are examined. The benefits and costs of using contingent workers are summarized. Based on two surveys it is demonstrated that not all people retire at the optimum time for them. They are highly motivated and want to work. Retirees seeking to re-enter the labour force offer definite advantages to an employer. Rather than pay agency fees to hire temporary personnel or contract business service organizations , companies may be better served by hiring retired workers. A few successful programs are mentioned.
