Abstract:Senior managers in four different industries: automotive, brewing, publishing and retail banking, were interviewed to ascertain their personal understanding of the implications of a Single European Market. One key finding was the belief that all these industries will beome more segmented as compaines differentiate between market segments in an effort to be more competitive. Concentration will continue, although it will be more in the form of strategic alliances. The forces of global integration and local adaptation will also differ between segments. Another key issue was the future potential of Eastern Europe for all these industries, whereas Southern Europe is likely to offer moderate growth. One conclusion was the relative unimportance of Single Market.
