Abstract:This article measures empirically the relationship between variety and structure in the music recording industry, entropy is used to give a measure of product variety. When too many or too few products are produced, the relationship between market structure and product variety is critical. The results support the hypothesis that increasing market concentration will yield lessened levels of product variety in the music recording industry. A linear relationship between relationship between structure and variety did not get strong support.
