Abstract:Devoting special interest in the degree of technical inefficiency and its determinants, this work examines the performance of the small and medium-sized manufacturing companies in 1995-2001. A micro panel data set is used to estimate a stochastic frontier production function and the inefficiency determinants. The findings indicate that the small and medium-sized firms seem to be more efficient than the large firms. In addition, the authors consider the relationship between firm's efficiency and a number of organisational factors related to the ability to adjust capital and labour successfully.
