Abstract:Prior research has established the existence of a relationship between historical cost earnings and security prices. However, conflicting conclusions have resulted when earnings are adjusted for inflation and changing prices. This study examines empirically the relationship between market systematic risk and several inflation and changing price adjusted earnings variables using two repeated measures designs, and concludes that the ability of historical cost/nominal dollar earnings to explain systematic risk is equal to or greater than that resulting from earnings adjusted for inflation and changing prices.
