Abstract:Board directors were questioned in structured interviews about the diversity of their company and the management's approach to handle diversity. The management of the business portfolio is examined. Unity is analysed at three levels: technologies and markets; necessary management skills and company style; the personality of the CEO. Reasons behind cultural diversity are examined. The role of top management is discussed. Task forces are found to be crucial in good communication and integration. Three broad categories of structure are identified: federation, divisional structure and divisional matrix. Hybrid structures are described. Managerial implications are summarized.
