Abstract:In the two years since it opened its United Kingdom plant, Japanese construction equipment maker Komatsu has built up a successful corporate culture and climate. In Japanese eyes, the point of a union is not to create confrontation but to avoid it as far as possible by establishing real trust and common goals. The workers can see that the systems they have introduced really work. Getting high quality work from suppliers and subcontractors has proved a time-consuming, challenging task. Komatsu workers have had to learn that end-user isn't the only customer they must satisfy.
