Abstract:The controversy between the accounting and legal profession known as the lawyers' letters controversy is examined. Improper financial reporting is analyzed. As requirements have increased for more disclosure on financial statements regarding legal claims, auditors have responded by seeking more competent and sufficient evidence. Auditors' and lawyers' standards are described. Some unresolved problems within the professional standards of the accounting and legal professions are mentioned. A real-world illustrative case written from the perspective of legal counsel of National Consumer Products Corporation is presented. Alternative strategies for corporate management are suggested.
