Abstract:Overcoming denial and learning how to recognize what's really going on are essential survival tools for today's managers in finding a new job. Typical situations of change in employment and position are overviewed (acquisition, merger, outplacement, crisis). The role of headhunters and consultants is characterized. Several symptoms indicating near alterations either in the company's position or in the position of a manager (handwriting on the wall) are listed, analyzed and illustrated (denied reports, downgraded security clearances, nixed privileges, perception that no one cares, finding one's office relocated etc.). The goals and content of a retention interview are described.
