Abstract:Albion Design of Cambridge, a staircase manufacturing business has faced many obstacles at the start-up. Founding director of the firm, Lancashire wishes to gain an edge on the competition first by producing better products than rival offerings; second, by making the staircase as cheap as possible. The biggest challenge was to find suitable sources for components. Of potential suppliers, many failed on both cost and efficiency. Getting into full production proved costly and building up and training staff took long. Sometimes they had to turn away orders to avoid overtraining. The firm budgets its growth taking into account the dangers inherent in the cyclical nature of the building industry.
