Abstract:Defining the value of a company has long and great traditions in the German business literature. This fact is based on the hypothesis that there is no market for companies and that surrogates (i.e.arbiter suggestions) are of essence. The article however demonstrates that there is a kind of market for companies in the USA. The existence of quasi market prices does not eliminate individual decision making models on the other hand. An overview is given on the important boundaries and cultural facts to be taken into regard when acquiring a company in the US.
