Abstract: | It is critical that managers invest appropriately in R and D (research and development) and that they manage these investments effectively. Two contingencies are evaluated that appear from the evidence to be linked with effective R and D investment and management: a firm's environment and its strategy. The stability of a firm's external environment and its level of diversification affect the level, type and management of its R and D investments. It is concluded that R and D effectiveness is increased through differential allocation of resources, appropriate emphasis on product and process R and D, and the management of linkages among business units. |
