Abstract: | Money-making became a respected activity in the Thatcher era: paper millionaires mushroomed. The twenty winners and twenty losers of this era are named and the rise and fall of their fortunes between 4 May 1979 and 28 November 1990, respectively, is presented. Datastream has compared the value of the publicly quoted shareholdings held by individual directors and their families at these dates, both for winners and losers. With private companies, Datastream has estimated the value of the shareholdings in line with prevailing stock market values. The collective worth of the twenty losers dropped from GBP 2.8 billion to 455 million. |
