Abstract:This article aims at contributing to understanding the changing role of government (henceforth as: gov/s.) in promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR). The study's focus is on the analysis of the new strategies adopted by gov/s. to promote, and to encourage businesses to adopt, CSR strategies and values. The study is based on the analysis of an explanatory framework (here as: f-w.), related to the development of a relational analytical f-w. and the integration of new partnerships (as: p-ship/s.) established by gov/s. in the CSR area with the private sector and social organizations. Compared are CSR initiatives and public policies in three European countries: Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom (U.K.) with the focus on governmental drivers and responses. Among others, it is found that gov/s. are incorporating a common statement and discourse on CSR, working in p-ship/s. with the private and social sectors. For gov/s., CSR implies the need to manage a complex set of relationships to develop a win–win situation bew. business and social organizations.
