Abstract:A new and improved method is presented for teaching the derivation of the proper form of a multi-attribute utility function under various assumptions of utility independence. It has three advantages over the usual mathematical method for teaching: First , students learn multi-attribute utility assessment as an extension of the single-attribute case. Second, students who learn by using visual representations, may learn the multi-attribute concepts better. Third, the new method clarifies the assessment needed to determine the weights for each term in the multi-attribute utility function. The developed method displays assumptions using the tree form of lotteries that are used to display concepts in decision analysis.
