Abstract:Based on data collected from two Portuguese universities, this paper examines university lecturers from the perspective of dealing with space and time. The working days of lecturers consist of teaching and researching, which causes their time-spaces to be task oriented. Their working schedules are often tight due to their need of securing research financing. Many lecturers find that technology helps them keep up with their schedules, but often the use of technology translates into the hazardous externalization of academic work, i.e. extra working hours from places other than the university. The paper argues that this leads to the colonization of various other time-spaces of the social lives of the researchers.
