Abstract: | Designed to illustrate the competitive interactions between foreign (here as: f-bks.) and domestic banks (as: d-bks.), this study examines early and late entry by f-bks. and d-bks. into the United States (California) market following a deregulation in the banking industry in the early 1980s. It is especially dealt with what response did the entry of f-bks. elicit from d-bks. and what influence did the entry of d-bks. exert on the evolution of the f-bks. in the market. Based on data from 1979 to 1988, it is shown that the density of f-bks. operating in the market had a U-shaped relationship with the rate of entry of U.S. d-bks., supporting the argument that foreign investment can encourage the expansion of d-bks. Although f-bks. being no obstacle to d-bks. entries, the presence of d-bks. deterred the entry of f-bks. |
