Abstract:This article explores the implications of the observed sharp expansion of foreign banks in the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) as measured by equity ownership. The mode of foreign entry is shown to have a pivotal impact on the post-entry performance of banks in CEECs. Compared with domestic and foreign-acquired (as: f-a.) banks, foreign greenfield (as: f-g.) banks are characterized by superiour cost efficiency (as: eff-y). The eff-y. of f-a. banks deteriorates in the initial year of acquisition, however improving thereafter. F-a. banks have less market power relative to domestic and f-g. banks. Overall, the CEEC banking sectors have benefited from the increased foreign bank participation, both as to higher efficiency and more competition.
