Abstract:Lynn Sharp Paine in her well-known article "Managing with Integrity" (1994) proposes a typology of Business Ethics programs by distinguishing between a Compliance and an Integrity. Her typology can be seen as both descriptive and prescriptive. We first localize the background for this typology in the context of the debate about Business Ethics implementation efforts in the U.S. We then try to find evidence for the empirical relevance of the distinctions made by Paine. As a result we propose an extension and modification of Paines's typology: We will argue that it is necessary to introduce a third approach to business ethics programs, namely complying (not only to the Letter , but) to the Spirit of the Law. A prescriptive understanding of this typology leads to proposals for integrating a specific type of compliance into the integrity approach.
