Abstract: | How the brainstorming problem should be presented to the group, whether as one all-encompassing question or as a series of separate questions focusing on one problem aspect, is a question received little research attention. This study reports the results of experiments in which subjects electronically brainstormed on intact problems or on decomposed problems. Groups that used the decomposed process generated 60% more ideas in experiments. These differences are attributed to the ability of problem decomposition to refocus members' attention more evenly across the entire problem, and the ablity of time constraints to increase the rate of idea generation. |
