Abstract:This paper discusses the endogenity in travel cost models used to determine the value of recreational site characteristics. The authors describe how previous research has dealt with it using stated preference techniques, and they describe an instrumental variables approach to address it in revealed preference context. The authors also demonstrate that failing to address the endogenity of congestion leads up to 50% understatement of value using a large recreational fishing site in Wisconsin.
